Weight loss – we all want it. Especially now that the summer is coming and we want to get into our sexy summer gear. Almost every day we get calls from people who are trying to lose weight and getting very frustrated. They tell us they feel they are doing all the right things – eating sensibly and going to the gym several times a week – but still their weight is not reducing.
Well if there’s one thing that I’ve learnt in the last 5 years through working with nutritional therapists it’s that there are many factors that can impact your ability to lose weight…… O.K. so it’s not just about what you eat? Interested? I was – there can’t be anything more depressing than sticking to a healthy regime, cutting back on the Chardonnay, religiously going to the gym and still not dropping that all important dress size!
To be honest a lot of problems are due to stress. Stress can contribute to weight gain in many ways. Think about it, if you really busy at work then you don’t have time to exercise or maybe you don’t have time to cook you end up living on unhealthy fast food. When you are really stressed your body releases more cortisol (a stress hormone) and too much of this can slow down your metabolism. (There is a more detailed explanation but I’ll leave that to the nutritionists).
But here’s another thing, If I’d got a £1 for every person who told me they’d been ‘diagnosed’ with IBS I’d buy a villa in the Carribean to get some sunshine and combat the SAD syndrome and vitamin D deficiency that I’ve got from living in the UK .
IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) isn’t usually a medical problem, it’s a nutritional one. It suggests a person has digestive inbalances which again can make it difficult to lose weight. (I’m also really amazed that some people can live with niggly and often, embarrassing symptoms when you can do something about it).
I could go on and on because there seem to be lots more reasons why that weight won’t shift but since we are all so unique there just isn’t one standard solution. You just have to bite on the bullet and see someone who knows what they are talking about. All I know is that it worked for me.
Until next time.
Warm regards
